3 Poems by 3 Poets: February 2024 ✍

Welcome back to another addition of 3 Poems by 3 Poets. If you haven’t read the first post of January’s choices, this is a monthly post where I will share 3 poems by 3 different poets, from various ranges of public status ( the renowned, to the more unknown). By the end of the year you will have seen 36 poems by 36 different poets and may have discovered some new names.

The first poem is from an author you may be familiar with; The TV adaptation of her book “Handmaids Tale” has been popular the last few years. Yes its Margaret Atwood. I never knew Margaret Atwood did poetry and I didn’t actually like Handmade’s tale when I read it at school. On the contrary, scrolling through the poetry foundation website as I often do, I found this witty gem written by her.

Margaret Atwood- “February”

The second of this month’s selection is “Divorced Fathers and Pizza Crusts” by Mark Halliday. So this is another that made me giggle on the inside. As the main character does, I too eat pizza often leaving the dry disappointing crust with them often ending in the bin or sometimes my husband will hoover them up. But what I really loved about this poem, is how I can picture the scene, despite not being able to relate to the circumstances.

The 3rd and final poem is Dear One Absent This Long While by Lisa Olstein. This one I thought id add in because on February 14th is a day some people look forward to, some people like me, think its a load of corny propaganda, some find it difficult because reminds them they are single. Yes I’m talking about Valentines Day. But what about those who find it difficult every day, because every day is a reminder that they are now alone, because the one they love can no longer be here? It’s not just a single day where they are missed, it’s every day in the small things and I think this poem certainly embodies that.

See you in March for the next edition of 3 poems by 3 poets!
