What books do you want to read?
Since there will be no interview to be posted this week due to a last minute cancellation from my interviewee, I thought I’d spend some time answering one of the “Bloganuary” writing prompts. If I’m being honest answering this prompt is more complicated than just listing a few books, as many reading lovers will know, buying books and reading them are two completely different hobbies. So my answer to this question would be the following:
- Any of the untouched books that are on my bookshelf ( especially ones that I bought 5 years ago and still haven’t got down to reading)
- As a rule, I don’t like to watch a film that has been developed from a book before I have read it. However I watched the films “The Shack” and “Are you there God, it’s me Margaret” before I even knew they were based on books. I loved the films so much I am happy to make an exemption for these two books.
- There are some longer books I would like to read for example “A Little Life” by Hanya Yanagihara. However my issue is I get overwhelmed when I see a book that long, I struggle to start the book out of fear of how long it will take. I hate starting a book and not finishing, so I hate to think of myself getting 300 pages and becoming bored of the story-line. However as I have spent the time reading it thus far, I feel I must force myself to try finishing it. But because I dislike the book , I won’t pick it up for ages . I won’t start another, out of obligation to finish that one. So I just end up not reading anything! The only book 800 pages long that I have started, finished and enjoyed was “Birdsong “by Sebastian Faulks. I also have Audible to listen to books, but I have this exact same issue, if I see the book is 26 hours long I am reluctant to use a credit for it.
- I have recently been enjoying short story collections; knowing I can read a story and feel no obligation to read the whole book in one go. So short story publications and magazines are definitely on the list.
